Samsung LCD TV: getting wireless Internet connectivity

At the Good Guys VIP sale (and no, I do not know how I qualified, but I am glad I did!) I picked up a Samsung 40" LCD TV for just over $800.  It is a small compared to many new TVs, but the size is right for the space we have, including the distance we sit from the wall where it is mounted.

A feature is its Internet@TV.  The model is one of the lowest in the range that has the feature.  It enables apps to be downloaded via a Samsung portal, similar to apps on an iPod Touch or iPad.  There isn't a browser for regular Internet browsing in this range - their $2000+ TV's have that built in. The range of apps is quite small.

Internet access can be via a network cable or a wireless adapter/dongle through a USB port.  A problem is that it must be a Samsung wireless adapter (the WIS09ABGN model is rrp $79).

When I purchased the TV the Good Guys advised they were out of stock of the adapters and would be for three or more weeks.

A few days later I went to JB HiFi at Southland to find they were out of stock indefinitely.  I then went into the nearby David Jones store. They told me they don't usually stock small accessories. Their computer showed that they had none in Victoria, a couple in stock in Sydney and plenty in Brisbane, but I would need to call the stores myself to track one down and ask them to ship it to me for about $20. (When I worked in retail for a David Jones affiliated business it was our job to search and order items for the customers. Times have changed.)  The good thing was that their price was $69, not $79, so delivered it would be only $10 more than RRP.

Harvey Norman's website couldn't tell me if they were available and any were in stock.

A trip to Dick Smith found none at Parkdale Plaza, and a search online of their stock at all stores in our area showed that there were none in the local area (there are six Dick Smith stores within nine kilometres of postcode 3192).   However I did find that I could order one for $79 including postage from Dick Smith Online. I ordered from Dick Smith Online one and three days later it was delivered to our door by courier.

Tonight I plugged it in and was quickly connected to our network.  I've downloaded apps from the Samsung store. Strangely, all the big name apps failed to download at first due to connectivity problems (Picasa, Facebook, YouTube, Google Maps), and the smaller ones download without a problem (Vimeo, etc). When I downloaded one smaller one, I could then register and the 'bigger name' ones seemed to work fine after that.

As an aside, using a TV remote control to enter usernames and passwords into apps is very very slow.  It uses the numbers on the remote in the same way as a mobile phone for SMS.

As I write this my children are watching Peppa Pig episodes on YouTube, via the TV.

Walk-in pantry: advice for designing yours

Now we've been in our renovated home for a week, we've picked up on some minor issues that anyone considering a walk-in pantry or butlers pantry may want to consider. I think we got ours right, and the minor issues are ones we'll correct ourselves, shortly, at low cost.

 Our pantry is exactly that on most days - a pantry. There's no sink, no oven or hot plates, and no exhaust fan. It does have a microwave and a milkshake maker, storage for irregularly used appliances, and a bench top that can be worked on. Big cost savings can be made with a walk-in pantry. By having a separate room and door, there's absolutely no need for cupboards and cabinet doors within the pantry. Monkey bars!

A few months back we picked up a discounted set of monkey bars (aka horizontal ladders) from Bunnings.  They were reduced from $299 to $80 because the packaging was damaged and the bolts for attaching the bars to wooden posts were missing. There were about four sets of bars on sale.

Last weekend I started assembling them myself, using about an extra $175 worth of materials (bolts, washers, nuts, four cypress pine posts, quick set concrete).  When it came to erecting them I needed a helping hand, which I received yesterday.

In the process of working out how and where to assemble them I found that the recommended height is 1.8 - 2.0 metres, and preferably 1.8m.  Soft fall is also important, to a depth of 250-300mm for up to 2.5m around the bars (Playground Equipment Safety Bulletin, February 2011). The Bulletin provides advice about selecting soft fall materials.

Bargain book buys

Preparing for some purchases for our home, I've been on the Choice website.  We've had an ongoing subscription to Choice since commencing our recent major renovation.

I was interested to see that Choice have just reviewed online book suppliers, as well as comparing to the local chain store, Dymocks.  The review was conducted after the changes affecting Angus and Robertson and Borders.

The Book Depository won on price, including delivery to Australia (it is free) for the selected books.  However delivery took the longest - 21 days for the full order to arrive.

Amazon was $16 more expensive, but the books were delivered within 14 days.

Booktopia was $26 more expensive, and took 17 days.

Dymocks (in store) was $38 more expensive, and one book that had to be ordered took three days.

Gleebooks (in store) was also $38 more expensive, and the one book that had to be ordered took six days.

Purchasing books is a balance between price, convenience and experience.  I'm rapidly shifting…
